About Jay
I grew up in east London, to an Indian father and a half-Russian, half-Polish mother. From an early age I felt that reality was far vaster, and stranger, than Western mainstream culture tells us.
My father’s family in West Bengal were immersed in the Advaita Vedanta tradition as members of the Ramakrishna Mission, so there was always some knowledge of this so-called “perennial” understanding running through my life.
It was in my mid-thirties that I properly reconnected with what I consider the truths at the heart of that lineage. I have worked for many years with therapeutic and spiritual traditions, including Zen-informed Jungian analysis, somatic healing work, and shamanic healing and ceremony.
In 2022 I had an experience in which my sense of separation seemingly vanished for a couple of weeks. That became the subject of Notes On Nothing. Over time a desire evolved to share offerings that might help people along their own way — drawing on what I have learned from mentors and teachers, but kept as grounded as possible in direct experience.
In my professional life I have been a creative writer for over twenty-five years, first as a novelist and then as a screenwriter, working with major studios and filmmakers. I still do that work full time. I live in Los Angeles with my wife and two daughters.
